Bishnupur is one of the nine administrative districts of Manipur with its headquarters located at Bishnupur town. The district is bounded on the North by Imphal West District, on the South by Churachandpur District, on the East by Imphal and Thoubal Districts.
The original name of Bishnupur was Lumlangdong (now Lamangdong). Bishnupur is popularly known as the ‘land of dancing deer’.
